The Cleveland Browns continue to have one of the more interesting quarterback rooms in the NFL, with veteran Joe Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders behind him.
No one knows for sure if the former Oregon Duck and Colorado Buffalo have what it takes to be the Browns' quarterback of the future, so Cleveland should continue to take swings at the position until they find someone who they know will be their long-term answer.
If the Browns want to take a chance on a former first-round pick who seems to be expendable by his current team, they could make a trade to add to their already crowded quarterback room.
Browns Listed as Top Landing Spot for Anthony Richardson
Sports Illustrated's Matt Brandon and Ethen Hutton recently listed three possible landing spots for the former fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Anthony Richardson. The Indianapolis Colts' young signal-caller lost the starting job to Daniel Jones and could be on the move.
"The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback room is filled with question marks behind a quarterback likely headed for retirement after this season. Cleveland elected to move on from Kenny Pickett and released Tyler Huntley, leaving rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel behind Joe Flacco." Wrote Brandon and Hutton.
"Cleveland could pull the trigger on a trade for Richardson, which shouldn’t cost much. He could grow in Kevin Stefanski’s scheme with a fresh start in the Browns offense. Richardson also adds competition for Sanders and Gabriel behind Flacco."
While the Browns already have two esteemed collegiate quarterbacks on the roster, neither has the pedigree of a first-round pick that Richardson carries.
Gabriel was selected with the 94th overall pick out of Oregon, and Sanders with the 144th pick.
Both of Cleveland's rookies have desirable traits, but neither is as physically gifted as Richardson. He could be a tantalizing addition for the Browns, and an offensive-minded coach like Kevin Stefanski may be able to get something out of the former Florida Gator that Indianapolis couldn't figure out.
If Cleveland feels like there's potential in Richardson that they don't have in Gabriel or Sanders, they should begin talks with the Colts and see if they can't acquire another high-upside passer in their pursuit of a franchise quarterback.
