Ole Miss makes major announcement on quarterback for LSU game image

The Ole Miss Rebels have made a monumental decision ahead of the heavyweight bout with LSU this weekend. Former Ferris State transfer Trinidad Chambliss is expected to start yet again in place of the Austin Simmons, who has been struggling with an ankle injury. Chambliss has managed to go 2-0 so far, but this will be the biggest test yet.

Ole Miss still awaiting QB's return ahead of LSU match

At the start of the 2025 college season, Austin Simmons was the starter, but he's since come down with a pesky injury. He was able to get on the field for a few snaps in the win over Arkansas, but that didn't last long as he eventually hobbled off the field.

In the two games since Simmons got replaced by Trinidad Chambliss, the Rebels have gone 2-0 and he's accounted for five touchdowns. That may allow them to work Simmons back to health slowly, since the formula with the backup is working so far.

On3 is reporting that Simmons is getting better but he's definitely not at 100% health just yet. In the meantime, there are small Heisman rumblings for Chambliss, which may say more about the field being generally lackluster to start the year than about how good the QB has been.

Lane Kiffin said earlier this week, “We’ll have to evaluate (Simmons’) health and then make a decision. Today was just a walkthrough, so not enough to evaluate. But at 100% he was our starting quarterback. But we don’t know what percentage he’ll be.”

Based on that, it seems that whenever he's healthy, Simmons will take the reins back from Chambliss no matter if Chambliss continues his excellent play and is able to beat the number four team in the country this weekend.
