Bill Belichick shoots down NY Giants rumors but keeps the door wide open image

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick doesn't seems to be focused on anything but the upcoming matchup with Wake Forest. That doesn't mean rumors aren't swirling about a possible NFL reunion with the New York Giants after the franchise fired Brian Daboll on Monday.

During his Tuesday press conference, Belichick was asked what the message was to his Tar Heels team about the mounting speculation. His response was very on brand for the 73-year-old coach.

"Getting ready for Wake Forest, that's all I got this week," Belichick said.

Another report press further with a more direct question about the vacancy and whether his players have asked about his intentions.

"I've been asked about it from time to time," Belichick said. "Look I've been down this road before. I'm focused on Wake Forest, that's it. That's my commitment to this team. This week it's Wake Forest, next week it's that opponent and so forth. I'm here to do the best for this team."

The last line is very telling about where his head is at currently. Belichick is in his first season with North Carolina and can still make a bowl game with two win in the final three game. The Tar Heels have won two straight games over ACC foes and don't leave the state of North Carolina to round out the season.

Belichick spent his entire career in the NFL before coming to Chapel Hill, winning eight Super Bowls-- six as head coach for the New England Patriots and two as an assistant for the Giants under Bill Parcells.

While Belichick might be studying Wake Forest, he left the door open for an NFL return and didn't directly say it was off the table.
