Who is Rice Football's Head Coach? image

Rice University is taking on the Charlotte 49ers for Thursday's college football action. Scott Abell, the winningest coach in Davidson College history, was introduced as Rice University's 20th head football coach following the 2024 season, bringing with him a reputation for rapid program turnarounds and a dynamic offensive philosophy. Abell, 53, inherits an Owls program searching for consistency in the American Athletic Conference after consecutive losing campaigns.

Abell posted a 47-28 record over seven seasons at Davidson, capturing two Pioneer Football League titles and making three FCS playoff appearances. Known for his run-heavy schemes, Abell's Wildcats topped the nation in rushing offense multiple times and set school records for offensive output.

He is well respected in college football. "I’ve known Coach Abell going back to his high school coaching days in Virginia. He’s a winner! He’s won at the highest level no matter where he’s been. I’ve learned a lot from him about offensive football and about being a head coach. I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at Rice," said Shane Beamer, head coach, South Carolina.

Rice football is undergoing a significant transformation in 2025 under new head coach Scott Abell, who brings an option-heavy offense and a disciplined approach after several losing seasons. The Owls started the year 2-1, with key wins over Prairie View A&M and Louisiana, and look to stay perfect on the road as they open conference play against Charlotte.
