As the NCAA Football season approaches, there are still some major questions looming in Ann Arbor; the Michigan Wolverines have not yet named their week one starting quarterback.
The main contenders are true freshman five-star Bryce Underwood and UCF/Fresno State graduate transfer Mikey Keene, with Missouri/East Carolina graduate transfer Jake Garcia and redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis also in the mix.
Here is what head coach Sherrone Moore had to say about the quarterback competition, via Clayton Sayfie of Rivals:
“Quarterbacks have been great, much improved, playing at a really good level,” Moore said. “We’ll see where it goes and how far it goes into that, as far as naming a quarterback. I know you guys want to know who the quarterback is. I’ll tell you on game week, before any questions come on that.”
Moore also noted that he will announce the starting quarterback on Monday, August 25, in the early afternoon: “Set your clocks,” Moore added.
While we must wait another 12 days for the reveal, the assumption is that Underwood will be thrown into the fire right off the bat.
The No. 1 player in the class of 2025, Underwood arrived on campus with massive expectations; expectations that include leading the Wolverines back to their 2021-23 dominance.
2024 was marred by bad quarterback play, and despite losing stars like Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Colston Loveland, and Will Johnson to the NFL, Michigan still boasts one of the better rosters not only in the Big Ten but in the nation.
The Wolverines are ranked 14th in the AP Preseason Poll, and you have to imagine the voters are confident in Underwood succeeding.
