Michigan looks to return to national prominence on the gridiron in the upcoming season under second-year coach Sherrone Moore.
Last season, the Wolverines stumbled in their quest to defend their national title, losing more games than they had in the previous three years combined. But Michigan closed the season with wins over Ohio State and Alabama, spurring a rush of momentum into the offseason.
As was the case last year, much of the intrigue lies under center. Five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood is the highest-rated offensive commit in program history. Might the dynamic freshman be the answer to the struggles that plagued Michigan's offense for much of last season? He'll have to beat out Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene for the starting nod.
On the other side of the ball, second-year defensive coordinator Wink Martindale seemed to find his groove in the homestretch of 2024. This year, Martindale will have different personnel to work with — Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant and Will Johnson were all taken in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft. The new group is led by edge rusher Derrick Moore.
This is also a team that will be tested early and often: Michigan's schedule includes a game at Oklahoma in Week 2, the program's first ever true SEC road contest.
