John Mateer Return Timeline: Oklahoma QB to have critical recovery phase after surgery image

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer is preparing to undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a right-hand injury he sustained during the team's 24-17 win over the Auburn Tigers last Saturday.

Coach Brent Venables announced on Tuesday that after consulting with medical experts, surgery was the best option for Mateer's "short- and long-term" health. While Venables did not provide a specific return date, On3's Pete Nakos outlined a possible return timeline for Mateer.

Soon after the surgery news broke, Nakos tweeted:

"Sources tell On3 there's some hope Oklahoma QB John Mateer could be back for Red River, but the recovery process will be critical."

The Red River Rivalry matchup against the Texas Longhorns is on Oct. 11.

Sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. is slated to start Oklahoma's next game against Kent State on Oct. 4 while Mateer begins his rehabilitation.
