Hugh Freeze praised his offensive line, and quarterback after season-opening victory
Auburn’s season opener wasn’t just a win, it was a statement. The Tigers leaned on a bruising ground attack and a poised debut from quarterback Jackson Arnold to defeat Baylor 38-24. Behind 307 rushing yards and a defense that tallied four sacks, head coach Hugh Freeze left Waco with plenty to celebrate, and a few things to fix.
Freeze’s first words after the game summed up the mood: “I’m thrilled for our fans and our team.” But beyond the scoreboard, multiple themes stood out from what was said after the victory.
Auburn’s offensive line stole the show. The Tigers controlled the trenches, paving the way for a 300-yard rushing night. “The offensive line established the line of scrimmage,” Freeze said. Arnold echoed that, crediting the unit for “playing their butts off.”
Arnold delivered when it mattered. The junior connected with Horatio Fields on a critical third-down conversion, a play he said he worked on “all offseason.” Freeze praised Arnold’s composure, noting he wanted the ball in his hands on the game-clinching touchdown.
Auburn’s big-play spark came from special teams. Rayshawn Pleasant’s kickoff return for a touchdown swung momentum, with Freeze calling him “dynamic on both sides of the ball.”
Still, Freeze admitted his team was “sluggish” at times and can play faster. That honesty fits his larger message, Auburn won, but the ceiling is higher.
The Tigers proved they can run with power and poise. Now, the question is how much better they can get.
