After an 0–2 start, Stanford desperately needed a spark. On Saturday night at Stanford Stadium, head coach Frank Reich delivered his first victory with the Cardinal in a 30–20 win over Boston College and he did not hold back about what it meant.
“Fantastic win right after a rough 0–2 start,” Reich said. “Coming home, having our home opener, having it be a conference game, just really proud of the team and the way we fought.”
Stanford’s defense set the tone with a goal line stand and fumble recovery, but Reich was overjoyed when describing what it felt like to finally celebrate with his team. “The mood was pretty special. I wondered what that was going to feel like. It was better than I even thought it was going to be,” he admitted.

The first year interim head coach spoke further about the reaction of his players as much as the game itself.“Just seeing, just feeling the satisfaction and the joy of the hard work…although it is just temporary, you know, it is just one game, it is just one night, that is what we talked about…when you love football and you love the guys you are playing alongside and you love to go to practice and do the whole deal, it makes it a special environment, and I think that is what we have,” said Reich.
For Coach, the victory represented more than a tally in the standings. It was the foundation of an identity. “I have been around some good team wins. This is up there with the best team wins I have been around,” he said.
Reich knows the celebration must be short lived with a trip to Virginia looming. But for one night, his Stanford program had reason to believe.
