College football rankings from 1 to 133: Florida State, Colorado make huge leaps heading into Week 2

It's been a while since you heard it like that. 

The Florida State "War Chant" became so pronounced Sunday that ESPN announcer Kirk Herbstreit stopped and said, "We missed you, Florida State." 

The Seminoles made the loudest statement of Week 1 with a 45-24 victory against LSU – even louder than the realignment bluster coming out of Tallahassee all summer. For what it's worth, Florida State is now 10-4 against SEC schools since their last national championship season in 2013. 

This was the loudest Week 1 statement for the Seminoles since redshirt freshman Jameis Winston went 25 of 27 for 356 yards and four TDs in 41-13 victory against Pitt – a game where the Seminoles had the Labor Day spotlight to themselves. Winston went on to win the Heisman Trophy and led Florida State to that national title.

Can Jordan Travis – a sixth-year quarterback – do the same? Travis had 380 total yards and five TDs against the Tigers. Michigan State transfer Keon Coleman flashed with nine catches for 122 yards and three TDs opposite Johnny Wilson, who had seven catches for 104 yards. South Carolina transfer tight end Jaheim Bell had two catches for 49 yards and a TD. Travis averaged 11 yards per passing attempt and 14.9 yards per completion. It's the devastating down-field attack that made Florida State famous in the first place. 

Now Travis has to do what Winston did in 2013. That’s go into Clemson and win. Winston led a 51-14 blowout on Oct. 19, 2013 – and the "War Chant" took over in Death Valley. Herbstreit was at that game, too. Like we said, it’s been a while since you’ve heard it like that. 

Each week, we will look at the college football rankings from 1-133. There were a few moves after Week 1, notably Colorado — which jumped into our Top 25 after Deion Sanders – who played at Florida State – led the Buffaloes to a 45-42 victory against TCU.

Here is how that looks heading into Week 2:

Top 25 for Week 2

1. Georgia (1-0)

Carson Beck finished 21 of 31 passing in a 48-7 victory against UT-Martin. That was one more passing attempt then Georgia had rushes for the game. Kirby Smart clearly is going to get Beck as many throws as possible before SEC play starts, and that should continue in Week 2 against Ball State.

2. Michigan (1-0) 

According to Pro Football Focus, J.J. McCarthy was 12 of 15 for 181 yards with three TDs on throws of 10 yards or more in a 30-3 blowout against East Carolina. Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards combined for 110 rushing yards. Look for Michigan to refine the running game against UNLV. 

3. Alabama (1-0) 

Jalen Milroe established himself as the starting quarterback, and that will be the focus heading into the Week 2 showdown against Texas. Keep an eye on freshman safety Kaleb Downs, who had eight tackles in his debut against Middle Tennessee. He could be the X-factor for a secondary that struggled in big games last season.

4. Ohio State (1-0) 

The entire week will be spent lamenting a stop-and-start offense and the quarterback situation with Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. Lost will be the fact the defense allowed just 153 total yards against Indiana. The offense has two weeks against Youngstown State and Western Kentucky to start clicking before the Sept. 23 showdown with Notre Dame. 

5. Florida State (1-0) 

This feels right to us. The Seminoles hammered LSU and will have to handle the hype that comes with a top-five ranking. The Seminoles face Southern Mississippi in Week 2. 

6. USC (2-0)

Caleb Williams has a game head start, but he has nine TDs, no interceptions and averages 12.2 yards per attempt. The Trojans average 61 points per game through two games. See how the other FBS schools can keep up with that.

7. Penn State (1-0) 

Drew Allar looks the part at quarterback, and a Beau Pribula touchdown with six seconds remaining against West Virginia showed James Franklin is not playing nice. The Nittany Lions play Delaware before the Big Ten opener against Illinois on Sept. 16. 

8. Notre Dame (2-0) 

The Irish are cruising and Sam Hartman looks the part at quarterback, but now a tricky road test at NC State is on the schedule. The last time Notre Dame visited Raleigh on Oct. 8, 2016, the teams played through remnants of Hurricane Matthew and the Wolfpack won 10-3. 

9. Washington (1-0) 

Michael Penix was great, but so were Rome Odunze (132 yards, TD), Ja'lynn Polk (101 yards, TD) and Jalen McMillan (95 yards, 2 TDs). That trio combined for 18 catches. A Week 2 test against Tulsa is next. 

10. Tennessee (1-0) 

We would love to watch Tennessee play Washington. Joe Milton was good, but the running game might be even more important. Jaylen Wright (115 yards), Jabari Small (67 yards) and Dylan Sampson (52 yards) all were effective in the opener. 

11. LSU (0-1) 

This is a steep fall for the Tigers. They will be a few spots higher in the AP Poll, but this is the cost of losing a blockbuster opener by three touchdowns. Brian Kelly turned this loss into a 10-win season last year. LSU gets a bounce-back game in Week 2 against Grambling before SEC plays begin.

12. Oregon (1-0) 

The 81-7 victory against Portland State is proof that game should never be scheduled again. Bucky Irving and four carries for 119 yards and two TDs. A road trip against Texas Tech won't be easy.

13. Utah (1-0) 

We'll apologize to the Utes for undervaluing them again. The defense overwhelmed Florida in a 24-11 victory, and Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson filled in nicely for injured quarterback Cam Rising. The Utes hit the road against a desperate Baylor team in Week 2 in a future Big 12 conference game. 

14. Texas (1-0) 

Texas fans might want to see more accuracy out of Quinn Ewers – who was 0 of 6 on passes of 20 yards or more in the opener against Rice. That timing needs to be better if the Longhorns want to have a shot to beat Alabama this time. That's the difference-maker. 

15. Wisconsin (1-0) 

Wisconsin took a half to get moving in Luke Fickell's debut, but Chez Mellusi (157 yards) and Braelon Allen (141 yards) combined for the majority of the Badgers' 314 rushing yards. It's not going to be "Air Badgers" overnight with new offensive coordinator Phil Longo. 

16. Kansas State (1-0) 

The Wildcats beat Southeast Missouri State 45-0 in a game that didn't get much attention. Now, Kansas State faces a Group of 5 test against Troy. DJ Giddens, who had 128 rushing yards in the opener, could flash in this one. 

17. North Carolina (1-0) 

North Carolina coach Mack Brown became the first FBS coach to get to 100 wins with two different schools in the Tar Heels' impressive 31-17 victory against South Carolina. Brown, who now has 275 career wins, won 158 games at Texas. He fittingly goes back to where it all started against Appalachian State in Week 2. 

18. Oregon State (1-0) 

D.J. Uiagalelei looked as advertised for the Beavers. He finished 20 of 25 for 249 total yards, three passing TDs and two rushing TDs in a 42-17 blowout against San Jose State. The Beavers face UC-Davis in Week 2. 

19. Oklahoma (1-0) 

Are we still undervaluing the Sooners? Quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Jackson Arnold combined to hit 30 of 33 passes for 422 yards and three TDs in a 73-0 victory against Arkansas State, but it's the defense's improvement that stood out. Will that continue against SMU? 

20. Texas A&M (1-0) 

Conner Weigman hit 12 of 16 passes for 175 yards and four TDs in the first half against New Mexico and finished with 236 yards and five TDs in a 52-10 victory. The Aggies did not score more than 38 points in a game last season. Yes, the whole Bobby Petrino offensive coordinator thing works and it will come into focus in a Week 2 matchup against Miami. 

21. Tulane (1-0) 

The Green Wave didn't miss a beat in a 37-17 victory against South Alabama. A huge stage awaits with Ole Miss visiting Yulman Stadium. Tulane has lost 11 straight games to SEC opponents – with the last victory coming on Sept. 16, 2006 against Mississippi State. 

22. Ole Miss (1-0) 

The Rebels dominated Mercer 73-7 in the opener, and Jaxson Dart, Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard all saw action. How much success will Quinshon Judkins have against that Tulane run defense? 

23. Duke (1-0) 

Why not? The Blue Devils pulled off a 28-7 upset against Clemson with the help of Riley Leonard, who had the signature 44-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Mike Elko has built an ACC contender in quick time. 

24. Colorado (1-0) 

We believe in Deion Sanders. Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter are legit Heisman Trophy candidates, the Buffaloes rolled up 565 yards of total offense against TCU and the Week 2 matchup against Nebraska is appointment viewing. 

25. Clemson (0-1) 

Clemson had three turnovers, two missed fields goals and played a dud of an opener with new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley led to a shocking upset. Can the Tigers get back in the mix under longtime coach Dabo Swinney? Of course, but this was a massive setback for their CFP hopes.

Rest of FBS (26-133) 

Here is a look at the rest of the FBS heading into Week 2: 

Get to know Troy's Kimani Vidal, who led the FBS with 248 rushing yards in Week 1. The Trojans could slip into the Top 25 if they can knock off Kansas State in Week 2. 

Watch out for Cam Ward, who passed for 451 yards and three TDs in Week 1. Can he lead the Cougars past Wisconsin for the second straight year? 

Louisville ripped off 24 unanswered points in the second half for a 39-34 victory against Georgia Tech in an exciting debut for first-year coach Jeff Brohm. Cal transfer Jack Plummer (18 of 31, 247 yards, 3 TDs, INT) will continue to get better. Consider the Cards were 1-of-11 on third down in the win. Louisville gets the home opener Thursday against Murray State.

Tough times for the Gators and second-year coach Billy Napier. The Gators should beat McNeese State before Napier come back into focus on Sept. 16 against Tennessee. 

Tom Herman won his debut, and Texas and Nebraska transfer Casey Thompson passed for 280 yards and five TDs.  The Owls are going to be a factor in the American Athletic Conference race. 

Hello, G.J. Kinne. The Bobcats opened the season with the upset of the week, and former LSU and Auburn quarterback T.J. Finley threw for 298 yards and three TDs.
