Michigan Gets Going on the Ground with Haynes
One of the easiest things you can do for a young quarterback is get the running game going, which is exactly what we are expecting the Michigan Wolverines to do with RB Justice Haynes and true freshman QB Bryce Underwood. Luckily, this is a pretty good matchup to do so, as Nebraska has had a good pass defense this year but has struggled on the ground.
The Nebraska defense has allowed 136 rushing yards per game, which admittedly is not horrible overall, but they allowed 82 yards on 13 carries from Houston Christian RB Xai'Shaun Edwards and 92 yards to Cincinnati RB Brendan Sorsby in Week 1. Haynes is the more talented runner than both of those previously mentioned, and Michigan is a better running team in general.
On the year, Haynes is fifth in total rushing yards in the entire nation, averaging 7.9 yards per carry on 16 attempts per game. It would not be a total shock to see him receive 20+ carries in this one as Michigan leans on their running game, meaning it would not even take that efficient of a game to hit this over for us.
Trust Brown for Duke
The guess here is that Duke is going to throw the ball a ton this week against NC State, which is not an outlandish opinion as that is what Duke has been doing to start the season. They have been passing a ton with portal transfer QB Darian Mensah, who is third in the nation with 345 passing yards per game. Overall, the Duke offense throws the ball at the fifth-highest rate in the country as well.
Luckily, Duke is matched up against a team where they should have a ton of success throwing the ball in NC State, who is starting two redshirt freshmen at safety. This is good news for Que'Sean Brown, who primarily lines up in the slot. Dating back to last year, he has recorded 50+ receiving yards in five of his last seven games.
Going up against a good NC State offense, combined with the fact that Duke has not had any success on the ground, Duke should once again be pass heavy in this game as well. Brown, who has hit this in two of three games this year, should be able to get us to the 50+ number once again to cash this over.
Klubnik Bounces Back Against Syracuse
There is no doubt that Cade Klubnik has struggled to start the season, as he has not yet hit three passing touchdowns in any of the three games so far this year, and the most yards he has thrown for is 230 in a loss to LSU where they only scored 10 points offensively. That said, this is the ultimate bounce-back spot against Syracuse.
Syracuse was expected to have among the worst defenses in the nation before the season started, and they have not disappointed. They are allowing just under 30 points and 439 yards per game, with the 113th-ranked EPA/play and 109th in terms of success rate.
The way teams have had success against Clemson’s offense is by blowing plays up in the backfield, which Syracuse is not equipped to do. For reference, they are ranked 128th in Havoc from their front 7.
So, Klubnik should be able to sit back in the pocket and take his time dicing up the Syracuse defense. While the season certainly has not started the way Clemson had hoped, they had a good offense last year that returned much of the same roster and coaching staff. So, expect him to get going in a big way Saturday.
