The countdown is almost over, and the BYU Cougars are finally stepping into game-week mode for the first time in 2025. Their season begins Saturday under the lights of LaVell Edwards Stadium, where Portland State comes calling.
It won’t be the first clash between these two squads. The Cougars and Vikings squared off in 2017, with BYU grinding out a 20-6 win to open that season. That means head coach Kalani Sitake and Portland State’s Bruce Barnum will be trading chess moves against each other for the second time.
BYU found themselves in the College Football Playoff conversation last season before wrapping up with an 11-2 record, capped by a statement win over Colorado in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Now, the Cougars will be aiming to recapture that early-season spark and build on last year’s momentum.
For Portland State, the climb looks steep. The Vikings, a Big Sky Conference program, limped through 2024 at 3-8 and settled for a tie for sixth in the league standings. This fall hasn’t started on the right foot either, as Week Zero delivered a 42-0 thumping at the hands of Tarleton State.
