The Pittsburgh Steelers are making a new addition to their defense, signing former New England Patriots safety and captain Jabrill Peppers, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The former Michigan man was cut by New England in late August, with head coach Mike Vrabel citing a lack of scheme fit.
Now, Peppers heads to the 1-0 Steelers, where he figures to make an impact right away in a depleted Pittsburgh secondary.
The Steelers Were in Desperate Need of Secondary Reinforcements
Pittsburgh was thin at safety after trading away Minkah Fitzpatrick over the Summer, and after losing DeShon Elliott to a knee injury during their 34-32 win against the New York Jets on Sunday, they were going to need to add some depth at the position.
Peppers, the former 25th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is entering year nine of his pro football career, spending time with the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Patriots.
The former Wolverine appeared in only six games in 2024, recording 40 tackles, an interception, two passes broken up, and a forced fumble.
Having played in many different defenses and schemes, Peppers is a versatile player, as he pointed out himself in a post on X shortly after his release from New England.
"Going on 9 years in this league. I’ve had 7 HCs & 6 DCs lol There is no scheme you can place me in where I won’t find a way to be effective," wrote Peppers.
Peppers figures to step in right away for the Steelers, who, as previously mentioned, are desperate for bodies at the safety position.
He'll most likely see significant playing time when the Seattle Seahawks come to town for Pittsburgh's home opener on Sunday.
