The Minnesota Vikings are preparing for their third game in a row without starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who is still recovering from a sprained ankle suffered in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Backup Carson Wentz has filled in admirably for Minnesota so far, going 1-1 and completing 66.7% of his passes for 523 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell gave an update on McCarthy's recovery ahead of Minnesota's matchup with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, as the team prepares for their matchup against the Cleveland Browns Sunday morning in London, England.
Kevin O'Connell provides an update on J.J. McCarthy's recovery
O'Connell spoke to the media following Vikings practice on Wednesday.
"J.J. is working his way back and is entering the next phase of his rehab where he can get a little more active. Looking forward to getting him back on the field practicing with the team as soon as we can," said O'Connell.
"But at the same time, we want to be smart and let that high ankle fully heal, and then he can really start attacking it. Working on his technique and fundamentals and getting reacclimated, which I think he will do very quickly."
The Vikings' head coach had previously said the former Michigan standout would not return to the field until he could practice for a full week.
With Minnesota's bye coming up next week, it seems like McCarthy will have a full week of rest before giving the ankle a try ahead of the Vikings' Week 7 matchup against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
