The Washington Commanders desperately wanted to upgrade their defensive line following their miraculous run to the NFC Championship game last season.

They did just that this offseason, bringing in Javon Kinlaw, Eddie Goldman, and Deatrich Wise Jr. However, their depth has already taken a hit, losing Wise to a season-ending quadricep injury last Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers.

If the Commanders want to maintain their depth, they may have to consider keeping an eye on the trade market as the season progresses, and a division rival may have the player they're looking for.

Commanders Trade Idea Lands Cowboys' Mazi Smith

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently updated his 2025 NFL Trade Block Big Board Entering Week 3, and had former Michigan Wolverine and current Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Mazi Smith listed as a possible trade candidate.

"The arrival of Kenny Clark via the Micah Parsons trade has essentially made Smith an afterthought. The fact that Dallas has a (mostly) new coaching staff this season does nothing to brighten his future with the franchise," wrote Knox.

"However, Smith is a 6'3", 337-pound defender, and size can't be coached. He's also just 24 years old and has two years remaining on his rookie contract. Teams looking for a rotational run-stopper or even a project to develop for the future should be willing to take a flier on him."

While the Cowboys weren't interested in trading Micah Parsons in the division, they may not mind moving off a former first-round bust to the rival Commanders.

Knox has the estimated return listed as a 2026 sixth-round pick, and that seems like a solid ask for a young player with upside. If Washington feels their depth is lacking, especially following the injury of Wise, it may not hurt to check in and see if they can pry the former Michigan standout from the Cowboys.
