Tigers enter Week 1 with key battles unsettled ahead of Clemson clash

Most of LSU’s starting lineup is set, but a handful of positions remain unsettled as Brian Kelly’s squad prepares for its season-opening showdown at Clemson. With so much on the line in Death Valley, the Tigers’ internal battles could play a major role in how they perform.

One of the most intriguing spots is left guard. Three players, Paul Mubenga, DJ Chester, and Coen Echols, have all rotated heavily during fall camp. Kelly praised Mubenga’s quickness against stunts, while Chester brings starting experience from his time at center. Echols, a former blue-chip recruit, offers raw strength that can hold up against the SEC’s biggest defensive tackles.

Another position to watch is cornerback depth. While Zy Alexander and Javien Toviano are penciled in as starters, competition behind them is still unsettled. With Clemson’s passing game under Tom Allen expected to test LSU vertically, that rotation could be tested early.

The kicker job also remains open. Kelly has yet to name a starter, leaving fans wondering who will take the first attempt in a pressure-packed environment.

Kelly insists LSU’s depth battles reflect competition, not concern. Still, with Clemson looming, the answers need to come fast.
