Florida predicted to replace Billy Napier with rising coach dubbed 'second coming of Steve Spurrier' image

The Florida Gators entered the 2025 season with a critical summer and fall camp, knowing full well that their schedule was one of the toughest in the country—if not the toughest. Saturday’s shocking home loss to USF has only intensified the pressure on head coach Billy Napier, who already entered the year on the hot seat. Now, that seat is blazing.

“Needless to say, this was a nightmare scenario for fourth-year coach Napier, who finally earned some goodwill with a strong finish last season but may now face trouble all over again,” The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel wrote.

There is already speculation about what Napier’s contract buyout could look like, and whether Florida is willing to pay it. The good news for the Gators: it’s nowhere near Alabama’s $63 million buyout for Kalen DeBoer.

“That loss immediately sparked an angry reaction from the Florida fan base, with many wondering what the cost would be to get rid of Napier. The Florida coach's buyout is 85% of his current remaining contract, which would be $19.38 million after this season,” CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland wrote.

Now firmly back on the hot seat, Napier is on thin ice. And according to multiple sources, Florida may already be eyeing replacements. One name gaining serious traction is Oregon head coach Dan Lanning. While Lanning has Oregon contending for national titles, coaching in the Swamp remains one of college football’s most storied opportunities.

“Lanning, 39, might look like the second coming of Steve Spurrier to Florida fans. He’s 37-6 since taking over at Oregon – one of four schools with a winning percentage above 85% along with Ohio State, Georgia and Michigan. Lanning isn’t afraid to take jabs at other coaches, and he learned as a defensive coordinator under Kirby Smart from 2019-21. Lanning has repeatedly said he has everything needed to win a national championship at Oregon, but would the allure of the SEC be too much to turn down,” Sporting News’ Bill Bender wrote.

Lanning has already proven himself to be a top-tier head coach. If Florida could somehow land him, it would offer years of coaching stability—assuming he keeps winning. At just 39 years old, he’s already reshaped the Oregon program, and he could bring that same transformation to Gainesville.

For Billy Napier, the margin for error is now razor-thin. And after the loss to USF, his time may be running out.
