Colorado coach Deion Sanders did not hide from the reality that last week’s loss to Georgia Tech was a wakeup call for his roster.

“Well, you got to understand a lot of guys don’t understand the standard,” Sanders said. “You got Cam (Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig) on the sideline, Jimmy (Jimmy Horn Jr.) and some of the guys that played last year and they understand the standard. You should have heard those guys getting on the guys. That was good because it is a certain standard. It is a certain level that we have expectations and some may not understand that.”

The Buffaloes now turn their focus to Delaware. Sanders praised the Blue Hens’ performance in their season opener. “Good team. Good team. They played against one of my dear, dear, dear friends in DeSean Jackson,” Sanders said of the Delaware State head coach. “And they got past them. They did well with their second quarterback. So, this team is tough. They are going to spin the ball, throw it. They are going to try to run it because what they just saw on film. So, we just got to go out there and do what we are capable of doing, passing as well as running the football effectively.”

One player who caught Sanders’ attention was Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci, who replaced injured starter Zach Marker and threw four touchdowns.

“First of all, for a kid to come off the bench and do what he did is phenomenal,” Sanders said. “Love him. Love the opportunity that he sees. This kid is a baller. He just was prepared for his opportunity. So, hats off to him. We are going to try to make it tough for him. He is going to try to make it tough for us. I love what they are doing. I really do.”

Sanders also went out of his way to recognize Delaware head coach Ryan Carty. “Coach Carty comes from a coaching family. His dad coached. I have the utmost respect for him. I read up on him a little bit. He was a quarterback at Delaware as well, so most quarterbacks tend to make pretty good coaches,” Sanders said.

The Buffaloes will also mix in freshman quarterback Julian Lewis, as Sanders confirmed earlier this week. Lewis is expected to see his first college snaps against Delaware.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET at Folsom Field. The game will be broadcast on FOX.
