Coach Prime reveals health struggles, issues public apology to BYU image

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders provided a candid update on his health and took time to issue a public apology to BYU following last weekend’s matchup.

Sanders acknowledged he continues to battle lingering foot pain. “My foot is throbbing right now. We just went on our walk and my foot is hurting like crazy. I can’t wait to get out of these shoes and go get it rubbed down,” he said. Despite the pain, he added, “My other health issues are pretty darn good. Got a great staff of doctors and people here that look out for me.”

With his trademark sense of humor, Sanders also admitted, “I can’t go a whole game without Depends. Thank God for Depends.”

A different kind of acknowledgment followed the health update. Sanders turned to the crowd about the incidents involving fans during the BYU game. Several photos emerged with spectators in handcuffs and videos on social media loudly played anti-Mormon chants. “On behalf of CU, on behalf of our athletic department, we would like to apologize to our opponents from a week ago for whatever derogatory statements were made by our fans,” he said. “That’s not indicative of who we are. Our student body, our kids are phenomenal. Don’t indict us based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously. Maybe I shouldn’t have said that as well, but the truth will make you free.”

For Sanders, it was another example of his blend of transparency and accountability by addressing both his personal health battles and a moment that reflected poorly on the program.
