Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt has been ruled out against Iowa State, according to Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham.

This news comes after Leavitt exited last week's game vs. Houston. He took a hard hit in the first quarter of the Sun Devils' loss to the Cougars on Saturday. Since then, he was spotted in a walking boot during Tuesday's practice, according to a report by ESPN

With Leavitt out, ASU will turn to backup Jeff Sims. The Nebraska transfer was 6-for-11 for 58 yards after taking a majority of the snaps last week. Sims is expected to start against the Cyclones.

"It's definitely something that's been lingering all year," Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham said about Leavitt's injury. "It's definitely something that could definitely turn into that (long-term) for sure, just because it hasn't progressed like we hoped. He's been dealing with this for pretty much the whole year."

Dillingham's explanation can be tracked back to the Sept. 20 game against Baylor. Leavitt injured his foot and was out in the loss to Utah two weeks later. He returned to lead Arizona State's comeback win over then-No. 13 Texas Tech on Oct. 18 before going down again. It's clear how important Leavitt is to the Sun Devils' offense.

Leavitt has thrown for 1,628 yards and 10 touchdowns with three interceptions and none in the past five games.

After leading the Sun Devils to their first Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff berth, Dillingham hopes they're still fighting to repeat last year's success.

Arizona State hits the road to face Iowa State on Saturday (1 p.m. ET, TNT).
