Alabama's boosters and power brokers sound alarm on Kalen DeBoer, real concerns in Tuscaloosa image

The Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to Florida State last weekend and severely underperformed. The Crimson Tide were heavy favorites against the Seminoles, who won only two games last season. However, after 24 years of winning their season opener, that streak came to an end—another sign that the Nick Saban era is over.

“If No. 8 Alabama needed any reminder that the Nick Saban era is over, they got it Saturday during their 31–17 loss to Florida State. The Crimson Tide not only began the season with a loss, but to an unranked Seminoles team by two possessions. The Seminoles, who went 2–10 a season ago, held control for much of the game over Alabama,” SI’s Eva Geitheim wrote.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer has faced criticism for the loss to Florida State. While the Seminoles made improvements via the transfer portal, Alabama didn’t seem fully engaged at times. This has sparked speculation that DeBoer could be on the hot seat.

“It’s my personal opinion that if Kalen DeBoer continues to struggle down in Tuscaloosa and that if it became known that barstoolgruden was interested in coaching at Bama that they’d happily pay that buyout of $70 million and bring Gruden in,” Maurice Clarett wrote.

While this is speculation, On3 reported that there are real problems within the program. The Crimson Tide’s top booster and other key figures are seriously questioning the future under DeBoer.

“Alabama fans aren’t just restless — boosters and power brokers are too. Early in Kalen DeBoer’s tenure, real concerns are surfacing in Tuscaloosa,” On3 posted.

Though it’s only week two and nothing should be overblown yet, there is genuine concern within the program. Following a legend like Nick Saban is bound to bring growing pains, but last Saturday’s performance was nearly inexplicable.

If DeBoer has another four-loss season, this could very well be the end—especially with boosters already breathing down his neck. In his second year, DeBoer already seems to be coaching for his job.
