Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd appears to be leaning towards keeping that job title amidst rumors he was looking at the New York Knicks’ vacant job following their dismissal of Tom Thibodeau.

“Sources: The Mavericks strongly believe that Jason Kidd will remain in Dallas (and not coach the Knicks). They’re telling people that quite loudly, too,” the Athletic’s Sam Amick tweeted.

Colin Cowherd recently shared his belief that Kidd would’ve never left Dallas for New York with Flagg set to be the No. 1 overall pick before Amick and Christian Clark’s reporting.

“I think the Knicks' issues are personnel and contracts—it's not coaching,” Cowherd said. “There is no way I'm leaving Dallas with Flagg coming from Duke. Cache: Knicks. Cash Cow: Cooper Flagg in Dallas. He's the best domestic player in a decade plus.”

It’s unclear what direction the Mavs plan on taking during the 2025-26 season with Flagg incoming. Kyrie Irving is set to miss most of the campaign due to recovery from an ACL tear, and Anthony Davis has an uncertain future after a litany of injuries in his career.

If the team is rebuilding, Kidd remaining with the team doesn’t make sense. But if Dallas’s front office plans to keep Irving and Davis, Kidd represents an all-in effort with Flagg becoming one of his lineup’s top scoring and play-making options.

From the sounds of it, Dallas doesn’t plan on making any major deals outside of a potential Jrue Holiday pursuit. That’d likely involve P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford in the proposal.
