Magic trade for Desmond Bane is clear NBA title decision in battered Eastern Conference image

The Orlando Magic just decided to go all-in.

And for any fans out there who are less familiar with Desmond Bane, trust that this is a legitimate, powerful move.

The Magic traded for Bane on Sunday morning from the Memphis Grizzlies.

ESPN's Sham Charania broke the news: "The Memphis Grizzlies are trading Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap, sources tell ESPN."

This is an official statement of intent by the Magic.

They've looked around the Eastern Conference and seen the bruised and battered opposition.

In Boston, Jayson Tatum has a torn Achilles.

In Milwaukee, Damian Lillard has a torn Achilles and Giannis Antetokounmpo is involved in heavy trade rumors.

Cleveland can't get it done in the playoffs. The Knicks can't find a head coach.

The East's surprise representative in the NBA Finals is the Indiana Pacers, which while an incredible feat for the Pacers, can't be the scariest thing ever for the Magic.

So now the Magic have a Big Three. Bane joins Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero in a stellar crew.

Bane turns 26 on June 25. He was the 30th overall pick in 2020, and he's greatly outperformed his draft position.

In 2024-25, he averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 39.2 percent from 3.

Add in strong perimeter defense and the 6-foot-5 Bane isn't that far off from being a superstar-level talent.

Orlando's depth is hurt a little with this move by giving up KCP and Anthony. And they'll have to hope they stay good for a while since they gave up all those first-rounders.

But this move is less about the future than it is about maximizing a contention window.

And with Banchero, Bane and Wagner together, the Magic are shooting for the stars.
