The New York Knicks have held off on making any big deals thus far, but they could still add the biggest name of the offseason.
After losing in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau, and their offseason has since centered on the team’s search for a new coach. As progress is seemingly made on that front, the Knicks are also having to build their roster for next season.
On Monday night, free agency opened, with the Knicks’ big move being the signing of former Sixth Man of the Year Jordan Clarkson. While simply adding Clarkson to the current core could be enough to get the Knicks over the top in a weak East next season, they might need to make a big splash.
Of course, there is no bigger splash than acquiring LeBron James. After the four-time MVP opted into his player option, James’ agent Rich Paul released a statement saying the star would be evaluating his future with Los Angeles.
Considering the Lakers’ lackluster start to free agency, that could result in James requesting a trade, and the Knicks could be a perfect suitor. As suggested by The Spun’s Andrew Holleran, the Knicks could throw Mikal Bridges in a deal as the centerpiece of a trade for James.

The Knicks would need to throw in a few more players to make the money work, but a potential depth hit to acquire James could be worth it. At the very least, a big three of James, Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns could be a scary sight for the rest of the league.
