Is LeBron James a free agent? Lakers star's 'Second Decision' announcement has fans confused about contract status image

Basketball fans raced to find a television on the famed night of The Decision, when LeBron James announced he was taking his talents to South Beach and the Miami Heat.

Now, the King is teasing a "Second Decision," and it's got the basketball world a bit confused.

This is what LeBron shared on social media on Monday, suggesting a Tuesday announcement of some sort:

There is obvious speculation that James is going to announce a retirement plan. But he has also used social media to tease various advertising deals, too, so it might be something else entirely.

Many were quick to point out that Oct. 7 is National Taco Day, and it's no secret James is a Taco Tuesday fan. James has also teased his retirement in the past for Amazon Prime, which starts Prime Day sales on Oct. 7.

In addition to retirement, taco and Amazon Prime questions, LeBron's tease brought up another topic.

Is LeBron James a free agent?

No, LeBron James is not a free agent. Having signed a two-year, $104 million contract extension in 2024, he's entering the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

This summer, James had to decide on the player option in his contract. He chose to opt in to it, and it'll pay him $52.6 million this season.

After the season, if he doesn't retire, James will be a free agent, able to go to any team in the league.

But for 2025-26, he's under contract to play for the Lakers.

"The first thing we want to do in terms of LeBron and his future is just give him absolute respect to choose his story with his family in terms of how many years he's going to continue to play," Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said at his season-opening news conference. "He's earned that right."
