Lakers predicted to sign Hawks center: 'Double-double production' image

The Atlanta Hawks are facing some pivotal offseason roster decisions, particularly in the frontcourt.

With young talent emerging and veterans aging, one key player’s tenure in Atlanta may be nearing its end.

Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus recently offered insight into the future of a seasoned center, suggesting a potential move to a Western Conference contender.

Pincus wrote, “(Clint) Capela, 31, has probably aged out of his stay in Atlanta. Onyeka Okongwu and others will fill that spot, leaving the veteran rebounder and shot-blocker to find a new home. He should expect a decrease in pay, but he may be one of the top available bigs on the market."

"He’s not much of a scorer, and his efficiency at the rim has dropped from 65.3 percent from the field in 2022-3 to 55.9 percent," Pincus continued. "Still, he might provide a team with double-double production as a 24-minute starter, sharing minutes on a playoff-capable team. Prediction: Capela may be a stopgap for the Los Angeles Lakers via the TMLE.”

As Pincus noted, the Hawks’ shift toward youth and versatility could push Capela into free agency, where his experience as a rebounder and rim protector will attract suitors despite a dip in offensive efficiency.

The Lakers could be an ideal landing spot. Even if LA's general manager lands another, younger center like Daniel Gafford or Nic Claxton, the Lakers will need a reliable backup center to manage regular-season minutes.

If Pelinka likes Capela, he should make an offer as soon as the market opens. Capela may command a lower salary than in his prime, but his basketball value remains strong among playoff hopefuls.
