The Los Angeles Lakers are excited about the future of Luka Dončić and are trying to build around him as much as possible. While it might take some time, Dončić wants to return to the NBA Finals—the stage he reached just a couple of seasons ago.
“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn't mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he's not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.
A proposed trade could very well reunite Dončić with former lob threat Daniel Gafford.
“The Mavericks walk away with the Lakers' 2031 first-rounder and a first-round swap in 2026. Gabe Vincent can be a stopgap playmaker as Dallas tries to get Kyrie Irving healthy. The Mavs need someone to help keep their heads above water until their superstar returns. This clears their big man glut and gives them more assets to find upgrades. The Nets would have to value Dalton Knecht to make this trade worthwhile. They are clearly rebuilding, so getting a young talent and a second-round draft pick for Haywood Highsmith is a win. Brooklyn got the wing for nothing, so turning him into some value is even better. The Los Angeles Lakers want a pick-and-roll partner for Luka Dončić, and Daniel Gafford is a strong long-term option. The 26-year-old has already proven he can thrive next to the Lakers star, and he’s right in the middle of his prime. Los Angeles has limited draft capital to trade, but this is a win-win. The Lakers get the defensive-minded wing they need, plus a trusted center,” Lake Show Life’s Tyler Watts wrote.
This deal would satisfy Dončić greatly and improve the center position significantly. While it involves moving some players and assets, it could be worth it in the end—especially with LeBron James eager to win a championship before he calls it quits.
The Lakers are aiming for an exciting season, and bringing in Gafford adds to that optimism. Coming off a first-round exit, they are prepared to do whatever it takes to put the roster in the best possible shape.
