Former Rockets fan favorite and defensive specialist Patrick Beverley took to social media on a livestream and spoke about his recent NBA comeback attempt with the Houston Rockets.
Beverley said, "I was in Houston working out with the Rockets for the last two, three weeks," and added: "I was really close. But with the cap, they don't have a lot of space. They can't really guarantee, because I think they first apron."
In order to stay under the first apron, Houston elected to move on from a reunion with Beverley, as the $2.3 million needed for a veteran minimum deal would have pushed them into the second apron, with only about $1.3 million in space remaining.
Beverley, who spent three years playing overseas after being undrafted, made his debut with the Rockets in the 2012-13 season at age 24. Beverley went on to have a 12-year NBA career, spending five years in Houston and four years with the Los Angeles Clippers before bouncing around to five teams over his final three seasons.
Although he was never more than a role-player, Beverley put together many great seasons. His best came with the Clippers in 2017-18, when he averaged 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.
Nicknamed "Mr. 94-feet" due to his full-court defense, Beverley received plenty of recognition for his hustle and tenacity. Beverley made the All-Defensive First Team for the Rockets in 2016-17 and finished top-10 in Defensive Player of the Year voting three times throughout his career.
Now at age 37, it appears as though Beverley is pursuing an NBA comeback after playing in Israel during the 2024-25 season.
