NASCAR will not promote an event in Downtown Chicago next season but has left open the possibility to run it back as early as 2027.
The Independence Day weekend races, which featured the Cup and Xfinity Series, was contested consecutively from 2023-2025 in the Grand Park distinct around the world-famous Buckingham Fountain. The agreement between the Sanctioning Body was for three years with an option for two more years.
Julie Giese, president of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race, sent a letter to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Friday informing him of the decision. Johnson had previously expressed support for the event albeit with the hopes of finding a new date for it.
In the letter, Guise provided a pathway for a race in 2027 or beyond.
She hopes the break in 2025 can “afford us the time necessary to work collaboratively with your office and other community leaders to explore a new potential race date and to develop a plan that further optimizes operational efficiencies on the course build and breakdown while continuing our presence in the local community.
“Our goal is for the Chicago Street Race to return in 2027 with an event that further enhances the experience for residents and visitors alike, as we work together towards a new potential date, shorter build schedule, and additional tourism draws.”
Alex Bowman won the race in 2024 in between Shane Van Gisbergen victories.
NASCAR is expected to announced a new street course event in Downtown San Diego by the end of the month for next season.
