Kyle Larson struggled mightily in his quest for the vaunted Memorial Day double on Sunday.

The Cup Series supernova toiled in his attempt to complete the two crown jewels of the weekend, the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600. Larson saw not one but both of his attempts end in flames; Larson wrecked out at the Brickyard before being caught in a multi-car collision in Charlotte.

Larson seemed far more likely to find success in the Queen City, where he saw in the front row after a scorching qualifying run. He found success in the race's opening stage and looked a candidate to compete for the title. That is, until he scrubbed the wall and damaged his once-glimmering chariot.

The rest of the race was a blur for the former Cup Series title-winner, who spun out a few laps later. Larson found himself multiple laps down at one point in the race.

And although he was able to claim the lucky dog as the race progressed, Larson never looked in position to post an especially impressive finish.

In the third stage, Larson's car got tangled with Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe and Daniel Suarez. It was enough to knock the Hendrick Motorsports star's steed out of the race for good, consigning him to a 37th-place finish.

Couple that with a lowly showing atop Indianapolis' cherry-brick road — soured by a mid-race collision — and the day went about as badly as possible.

"I hate the way the day went," Larson said. "I wish I could hit the reset button. I feel terrible for everybody, especially for [car owner] Rick Hendrick,"

It's unclear whether Larson will try his luck at the doubleheader next year. He certainly seemed less enthused than he was following the 2024 iterations of the races.

"The Double is a tough undertaking," Larson said. "The window of time is just too tight."

Kyle Larson live updates, results, highlights from Indy 500-NASCAR double

    All times ET.

9:20 p.m.: Larson wrecks out at Charlotte. He'll likely finish at or around 37th place.

8:30 p.m.: Larson’s teammate, William Byron, captures the second stage crown. Larson, meanwhile, gets the lucky dog to get back on the lead lap.

    8:16 p.m. -- On Lap 159 overall (lap 59 of Stage 2), Larson is in 31st.

7:42 p.m. -- Larson is already back on pit road on lap 106. The crew is working on his car. At this point, it seems like he can get back on the track, but he has fallen far from No. 2 and won't be on the lead lap.

7:37 p.m. -- Larson is still on the lead lap, but is in 35th position.

7:31 p.m. -- The first stage ends under caution. Larson finishes 31st to begin the race.

7:02 p.m. -- Larson is now 28th on the re-start, halfway through Stage 1. His car should be good to go.

6:52 p.m. -- Larson was leading and got up into the wall on turn 3 around lap 39. On lap 41, he got lose again, but this time on turn 4 and slid into the center field drawing a caution. He will be able to stay in the race but is dropping down the field.

6:35 p.m. -- The double quest is over, but Larson is pushing to still place well at the Coca-Cola 600. He led the first lap and is in the lead after 10 laps.

6:30 p.m. -- Kyle Larson has made it into his car and onto the track. They did the pace lap and the Coca-Cola 600 is underway.

5:35 p.m. -- Larson is at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He will start second at the Coca-Cola 600.

5:08 p.m. -- The Amazon Prime broadcast confirmed that Larson has touched down in North Carolina.

5:02 p.m. -- Though it isn't from any official outlets yet, fans who were tracking Larson's flight are saying that the driver has landed in Charlotte. The Coca-Cola 600 should begin in about an hour.

4:26 p.m. -- Alex Palou has won the Indy 500. Larson is still en route to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. Larson finishes 27th with his wreck.

3:23 p.m. -- The Fox broadcast showed a helicopter flying and the announcers assumed that that was Larson heading to Charlotte.

3:22 p.m. -- Larson speaks about his wreck at the Indy 500.

2:58 p.m. -- Larson's quest for double-duty is done. He wrecked on lap 92 as the race field was re-starting from a caution. The good news is that this will give him time to get to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600.

2:39 p.m. -- At Lap 75, Larson is running 20th. The good news is that his dropping around slower drivers, means he can make moves up the race field.

2:22 p.m. -- One quarter of the way through the Indy 500, and Larson is up to 23rd.

2:13 p.m.-- 40 laps down and Larson is in 30th.

2:07 p.m.-- The drivers are back to green for Lap 30.

2:03 p.m. -- Larson is still new to IndyCars, and has the pressure of the day on him. He was in second gear in pit road and stalled trying to come out of the caution pit. He dropped from 19th to 31st in the field.

1:55 p.m. -- There is light rain, and the yellow flag has come out for a caution. This is bad news for Larson, who needs this race to run smoothly to have a chance to make it to the Coca-Cola 600.

Larson may be forced to leave the Indy 500 early, as new rules for NASCAR have his playoff eligibility on the line if he misses the Coca-Cola 600.

1:44 p.m. -- There have been two wrecks early at the Indy 500. Larson has avoided both and is currently running 19th as of the 12th lap.

1:23 p.m. -- Roger Penske tells the drivers to start their engines! The track is dry and the weather looks clear. Larson should be underway soon, and still is in the window of making the Coca-Cola 600.

1:20 p.m. -- After about a 40-minute delay, we are expected to get started soon.

12:50 p.m. -- We are currently under a delay to fire engines. Larson has to be having flashbacks to last year when he tried to pull off double duty. The 2024 Indy 500 was delayed almost four hours and it caused him to miss the Coca-Cola 600.

12:43 p.m. -- Drivers got in their cars, and some rain started lightly falling. Drivers are remaining in their cars with a crew member holding an umbrella over them.

12:37 p.m. -- Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez instruct the drivers to go to their cars.

12:32 p.m. -- We are about 10 minutes away from the start of the race. Larson will begin in the 7th row, driving the No. 17 car.

12:05 p.m.-- Those tuning in to pre-race coverage may be nervous about the grey skies, covered cars and cameras. The good news is that, per AccuWeather, there is a 49% chance of rain at 1 p.m., but then it dramatically drops down to 2% for the rest of the day.
