Blue Jays talks for Cardinals 2x All-Star 'have advanced', per insider image

The Toronto Blue Jays are currently tied with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in the American League. They lead the New York Yankees by four games in the AL East.

Toronto was a seller at last year's trade deadline, dealing away expiring contracts to contenders. This year, things are different.

The Blue Jays have a legitimate shot to compete for a World Series title this time around, and could use some bullpen help with the deadline less than 48 hours away.

John Denton of MLB.com recently discussed St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley and his trade stock. He also noted that talks between St. Louis and Toronto are intensifying.

"Trade talks with the Jays are so advanced that they have already discussed with Helsley’s camp a plan of having Jeff Hoffman and Helsley share the closer role, per a source. Toronto did land Seranthony Domínguez from the Orioles on Tuesday, but he is likely just the appetizer with Helsley being the main course for a relief-starved team," Denton wrote.

Helsley saved 49 games in 2024, setting a Cardinals franchise record and later being named the National League Reliever of the Year. This year, he hasn't been quite as dominant, but has still been effective.

The 31-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 36 appearances and has recorded 21 saves with St. Louis. Toronto will have to give up a haul of prospects in order to land the two-time All-Star from the Cardinals.

However, they desperately need relief arms, and it would make sense for them to try and land Helsley. The Cardinals are selling, and Helsley is on an expiring deal.

A trade for Helsley would significantly bolster Toronto's chances at running away with the AL East. Having Helsley and Hoffman at the back end of their bullpen would make them a serious threat.

We'll see if Toronto is willing to meet the Cardinals asking price.
