The Toronto Blue Jays made the biggest signing of the offseason thus far when they agreed to a seven-year, $210 million deal with Dylan Cease. To continue this win-now mindset, they need to land another white whale to really lock themselves into another World Series run.
Fansided’s Zachary Rotman believes that the white whale could be Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber was the runner-up for NL MVP and had the second-most homers in baseball.
“If the Blue Jays really want to get creative, they'll consider signing Kyle Schwarber. Giving a 32-year-old DH the kind of massive deal he's likely to receive might not age well, but the Jays are in win-now mode, and Schwarber would make this offense much scarier…Schwarber just hit 56 home runs and finished second in the NL MVP balloting. Even if the team's defense gets worse, adding his bat to that lineup would make them that much tougher to pitch to. Imagine dealing with a trio of Springer, Schwarber and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. To start a postseason game. Good luck,” Rotman wrote.
This past season, Schwarber slashed.240/.365/.563/.928 with 23 doubles, 56 home runs, and 132 RBI in 162 games played. Add him into the lineup with Guerrero and Springer, and it’s like Rotman said: Good luck.
The only caveat to this signing is that Schwarber can only really DH. That means Springer, the current DH, would have to go back to the outfield full-time. If Toronto’s OK with that, then this could be a viable signing.
Hopefully, the Jays figure out what they want soon; otherwise, another contender looking to acquire Schwarber will swoop in and take him.
