Babe Ruth. Lou Gehrig. And George Springer?

That's the company the Toronto Blue Jays' veteran outfielder is keeping right now in the current hot streak he's on. It's hard to do better than that in the history of baseball.

This is based on the last 45 games Springer has played. In that time, he has:

  • 66 hits
  • 50 runs
  • 39 RBI
  • 16 home runs
  • 9 stolen bases

According to OptaStats, this is the third time in MLB history that a player has put up all of those numbers over one 45-game stretch.

The others: Babe Ruth in 1920 and Lou Gehrig in 1931.

That's the kind of feat that is hard to even sum up in words.

Ruth and Gehrig? Two of the most legendary of legends? Those New York Yankees pillars of a time when baseball was indeed America's Pastime?

And now they're joined by a guy playing in Toronto who looked a year ago to be pretty much washed up.

Springer has revitalized his career, and it has put him in the presence of all-time greats.

No one puts up numbers anymore like those guys did back in the day, when the pitchers didn't throw 100 with movement. Ruth, Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Rogers Hornsby - they feel like they'll never be matched in so many ways.

But at least for a 45-game span, Springer has kept company with the Yankees' legendary Nos. 3 and 4. It's hard to top that.
