The Toronto Blue Jays were just one win away from capturing their first World Series title since the 1990s. All they had to do was win one game before the Los Angeles Dodgers won two. However, it didn’t turn out that way — and a controversial “lodged ball” call may have cost Toronto the championship.
“The fact this is ruled a ‘lodged ball’ but then the CF has no problem picking it up and throwing it in is dumb. He didn’t even make an effort to grab it right away. Blue Jays might have gotten screwed,” SI’s JD Andress posted.
The Blue Jays controlled most of the game until Miguel Rojas worked a full count and sent one over the left-field wall. Despite struggling offensively, the Dodgers somehow came out on top — even though the Blue Jays looked destined to win it all.
“The Dodgers batted.203 in the World Series, the worst mark by a champion since 1966. Over the last 2 seasons, they have batted a combined.204 in the World Series and won both years,” ESPN’s Jesse Rogers wrote.
After the game, emotions ran high in the Blue Jays’ locker room. Some key players are set to hit free agency this offseason, including Bo Bichette and veteran pitcher Chris Bassitt — who made it clear he wants to return to Toronto.
“I love these guys … it’s hard to replicate true love. You can try to replicate this. A lot of people will try, but it’s not really possible,” Bassitt said following the crushing World Series loss.
Reaching the World Series is proof of how special this team is, but what made the Blue Jays truly unique was their tight bond throughout the summer and into October. No one wants to leave a team like that.
For Bassitt, a reunion seems possible. With two rotation spots expected to open during Spring Training, his veteran presence would be invaluable — and the Blue Jays shouldn’t hesitate to bring him back.
