The St. Louis Cardinals vastly outperformed their expectations in the first half, going 51-46 through their first 97 games. As such, they are within striking distance in the National League Wild Card race.

In any other season, this would be a clear sign to buy at the trade deadline. However, the 2025 season is different for St. Louis in that they were not expected to be a contender.

They have some very valuable trade chips on their roster that could bring back solid returns if they decide to sell. That might ultimately be the best course of action.

Among the trade chips is veteran reliever Phil Maton. Dayn Perry of CBS Sports predicts St. Louis will sell and that Maton will be somebody they listen to offers for.

"The Cardinals are surprise contenders in the NL, at least in the wild-card race, but they'll still likely look to offload some veteran contributors before the deadline as part of the ongoing transition to a younger and (and less costly) roster," Perry predicted.

"Look for them to seek out takers on the likes of Ryan Helsley, Erick Fedde, Steven Matz, and possibly Phil Maton."

Maton was the Cardinals only free agent signing last offseason. He was signed to a one-year, $2 million contract on March 13.

In 37 appearances, Maton has posted a 2.55 ERA and recorded two saves. But with him having a breakout campaign, St. Louis would be wise to at least listen to offers for him.

While not the most valuable of the Cardinals trade chips, he could still fetch a solid prospect or two in return if traded, and the Cardinals don't have much pitching in their system.

In all likelihood, St. Louis will not last long if they are to reach the postseason. Their roster isn't capable of competing with the likes of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets for a World Series title.

The best course of action may be to sell and set up the future.
