The St. Louis Cardinals are on the outside looking in on the postseason race while currently having a 66-69 record.

A division title is nearly unrealistic as the Milwaukee Brewers carry the best record in the league, and they are still 6.5 games behind the New York Mets for the final spot in the NL Wild Card.

Injuries have been a major factor in the record slipping, and the Cardinals could be without first baseman Alec Burleson for an extended period of time.

Cardinals' Alex Burleson has a lingering wrist injury, could land on IL

Heading into their weekend series against the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson could be going to the injured list after a lingering wrist injury has gotten worse.

Burleson, 26, had missed a game last week due to a wrist problem. Reports say that his wrist has started to flare up again, resulting in him having to leave the Cardinals game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.

"The Cardinals are expected to promote both Jimmy Crooks and Cesar Prieto from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, and it would appear Burleson going on the 10-day injured list is one of the possible corresponding transactions," Rotowire reported.

If this is the case, there's a chance that Burleson could be missing the rest of the regular season. It would be a sad end for the first baseman, as he's put together his best season of his career in 2025.

Through 122 games this season, Burleson has career-highs in batting average (.286), on-base percentage (.337), slugging percentage (.451), and OPS (.788) while hitting 16 home runs and 60 RBI.
