Eight Seattle Mariners couldn't touch Tarik Skubal on Sunday night.

Good thing Jorge Polanco was in the lineup.

Polanco proved himself a true playoff superhero as the Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers and their ace, 3-2, to even the ALDS at a game apiece.

This shaped up as a potential nightmare scenario. The Mariners had already dropped the first game of the series in 11 innings, and now they had to face the best pitcher in the American League in Game 2 of a best-of-five. It had the potential to get late early for Seattle.

But Polanco, batting from the right side as a switch-hitter against the lefty Skubal, homered to get the Mariners on the board.

And then he homered again to make it 2-0 over Skubal.

The Tigers tied the game up later, but Julio Rodriguez doubled in the game's final run to secure victory.

This night was about Polanco.

The veteran middle infielder has had good seasons and bad in his MLB career. He's bounced around the infield a bit, and he's in his second season in Seattle after 10 with the Minnesota Twins.

There's nothing about Polanco that screams playoff hero.

But that's the beauty of baseball. On any given night, it can be anyone who steals the show and writes a name in franchise lore.

If the Mariners survive in these playoffs and move on, epics will be written about Polanco's conquering of Skubal.

It truly was a special sight to behold.
