The San Diego Padres clinched a postseason berth on Monday after a heroic 11th-inning walkoff single against the Milwaukee Brewers. San Diego still holds firm as the second Wild Card team in the National League, but it can still win the NL West in the final week of the season.
However, it may have to be done without Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis has been out of the lineup for two straight days, dealing with an illness that is not known. On Tuesday, there was a slight update to his status.
Fernando Tatis Jr. update has emerged
Ahead of Tuesday's game against the Brewers, it was reported by Darnay Tripp of NBC 7 San Diego that Fernando Tatis Jr. is still battling with an illness, and San Diego's coaches and medical staff didn't want him to battle through it by partaking in baseball activities or being in the dugout.
October is just six days away, and Tatis Jr. is one of the Padres' most important players. And the idea is that if the illness is still lingering by the time the Padres are ready to take the field in October, Tatis Jr. will be out there with his team.
However, the illness does sound severe, and San Diego should allow him to recover for as long as possible, and the hope is that he can get a few at-bats during the final weekend of the MLB season.
Tatis Jr. is hitting .267 this season with 23 home runs, 66 RBIs, and a wRC+ of 122.
Sporting News will continue to report on the details of his illness and update with more stories in the future.
