Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner will see a doctor today for a right hamstring strain he suffered in Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park, manager Rob Thomson said (H/T MLB.com).
Turner suffered the injury in the top of the seventh inning with two outs. He sliced a ball to Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez and hurt himself trying to beat the throw, which sailed past the glove of first baseman Troy Johnston.
Per Justin Morris of MLB.com, he then motioned to the dugout and walked off the field without assistance.
Turner will see doctor Monday
Turner explained what happened to his hamstring after the game:
“[My hamstring was] just kind of grabbing on me,” he said, per Morris. “It didn’t feel good, felt like if I could’ve kept going I would’ve, but [I wanted to] get out of there and try to limit the damage.”
Turner hit the injured list with a left hamstring strain early in the 2024 season, but other than that, he’s stayed healthy the past two years. And he’s been exceptional this season, slashing .305/.356/.458 with 15 homers and 69 RBI.
Turner also spoke about the timing of the injury postgame:
“It’s never a good time, really, …but something like this late is not fun. And when these games really matter, you need to be out there. [That’s the] more frustrating part with that more than anything–is coming down the stretch, playing in big games and not being able to be out there. So hopefully it’s not too many [games that I miss].”
The Phillies will know more after Monday’s visit to the doctor. Regardless, Philadelphia is in strong position to win the NL East for the second straight season, holding a seven-game lead over the second-place New York Mets.
