Phillies predicted to pursue $54 million five-time All-Star if Kyle Schwarber walks in free agency image

The Philadelphia Phillies find themselves on the brink of elimination today, facing the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight in L.A. for game three of the NLDS. If they lose, their offseason begins, and some undesirable things may happen.

One of those things is Kyle Schwarber’s potential free agency. He’s going to command a hefty contract, and with the way Philly has been treating him recently, he really could consider leaving. If he does, Fansided’s Mark Powell believes that New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso could be the answer if that does happen.

“Speaking of those Phillies, they are (unfortunately for Mets fans) my dark horse fit for Alonso in part because they might lose Schwarber. Phillies fans love Schwarber, and because of that Dave Dombrowski will lead the charge to re-sign him. However, just how valuable is a DH? If the Phillies are unable to match Schwarber's price, look for them to spend some of that money on Alonso, who is a very capable replacement,” Powell wrote.

This season, Alonso slashed .272/.347/.524/.871 with 38 homers and 126 RBI over 162 games. While his power doesn’t match the 56 homers and 132 RBI of Schwarber, he makes up for it with better contact, something the Phillies could really use from Schwarber right now.

Hopefully, the Phillies can somehow retain Schwarber, as he still is one of the best power hitters in baseball. However, if they can’t, Alonso should be at the top of their replacements list.
