The Boston Red Sox had hope that Walker Buehler could be a factor in their rotation this season. However, he has struggled in his first year with his new club, appearing in 23 games, holding together a 7-7 record with a 5.45 ERA.
He was recently released and picked up by the Philadelphia Phillies, who could use some reinforcements with Zach Wheeler done for the season. He had been dealing with venous thoracic outlet syndrome and required surgery, removing a blood clot from his upper right extremity.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora believes he will be a good fit for the Phillies. He recently sat down and talked about the recently released two-time All-Star, via WEEI Afternoons.
"I'm glad he landed with the Phillies," Cora said. "He's gonna be OK. ... He's a pro. He's a guy that I really respect, very smart kid. I believe he's gonna help the Phillies win a lot of games over there."
The Phillies make their plans known for Walker Buehler
With under a month of the regular season left, Walker Buehler does not have much time to get comfortable with his new club. According to The Athletic's Matt Gelb, he will make one start at Triple-A before joining Philadelphia's rotation.
He is scheduled to make his first start as a member of the Phillies on September 12 against the Kansas City Royals. That will certainly be a test for Buehler with guys like Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino swinging a hot bat as of late.
