Ohtani Goes Yard for Dodgers
For Shohei Ohtani, the +280 price is pretty high, considering he spent much of the season with his home run odds in the high +100s. While Ohtani did not have a great day at the plate yesterday specifically, he is not far removed from being red-hot at the plate. He has a total of six barrels over the last seven days, which is the most in MLB. Nobody else even has five in this stretch, so he is multiple barrels above the next set of batters.
While Ohtani is admittedly going up against a decent pitcher in Ryne Nelson, this is still a matchup that should favor Ohtani. Let's not forget, this Ohtani fellow can hit a baseball well. He has the third-most home runs in MLB at 53, with the third-highest ISO rate at .336 and the second-highest barrel rate at 23.1%.
He is, obviously fantastic, currently in the midst of a heater, and we are getting a good price (for Ohtani) at +280. He goes yard tonight.
Acuna Jr Stays Hot, Homers in Atlanta
Speaking of batters that are red-hot, let's talk about Ronald Acuna Jr. He has hit a home run in back-to-back games and in three out of the last five games. He has a total of four HardHits in his last two games, but all four were hit at 100+ mph exit velocity, including both home runs.
Over the last week, he has a respectable 10 HardHits but has really come on in the last five days. The pitching matchup is a little bit of an unknown, with a young pitcher on the mound for the Nationals in Andrew Alvaraz.
Alvarez has only pitched 19 innings this season, his first time pitching in the majors. He has admittedly been pretty good in those 19 innings, but this is still a tough matchup for a young pitcher going up against a fantastic batter who is in a groove.
Torkelson Homers For Reeling Tigers
As a team, the Tigers are on one of the worst collapses in MLB history, and are looking likely to miss the playoffs, which would have been impossible to think of happening even a couple weeks ago. That said, Spencer Torkelson himself has been pretty good at the plate.
He has four barrels over the last week, which, as mentioned earlier, ties him with a bunch of batters with the second-most in the MLB. Going back to the last 14 days, he has a total of eight barrels and 21 HardHits, both of which lead the Tigers. That ties him with the third-most barrels and the ninth-most HardHits in this stretch.
The starting pitcher for the Guardians, Tanner Bibee, does admittedly struggle more against lefties, but he has really struggled against righties recently, allowing a home run every 14 at-bats to RHH over the last five weeks.
Lastly, this is one of the better home run games of the day, from a weather + venue perspective, with a 17% home run index.
