The Dodgers will begin their World Series title defense in earnest this week against the Reds in the NL Wild Card Series.
L.A. won its 12th NL West title in the last 13 years, continuing a remarkable stretch of sustained success. Even still, this season wasn't without its hiccups: Sure, the Dodgers won 93 games, but that marks their fewest regular-season victories in a full season since 2018. It's why they didn't earn a first-round bye, finishing behind both the Brewers and the Phillies in the NL standings.
Perhaps they'll kick things into gear in the playoffs — they certainly have the star power to do so. The effort starts with Shohei Ohtani, who readies for his first postseason as a two-way player. Ohtani smashed 55 home runs in another sensational season at the plate, but, more importantly, he returned to the mound, pitching to a 2.87 ERA in 14 starts.
The Reds, sneaking into the postseason with just 83 wins, will have their hands full. They lost five of six head-to-head meetings with the Dodgers in the regular season.
But, the teams with nothing to lose are often the most dangerous. Cincinnati touts stellar starting pitching, led by right-hander Hunter Greene, who wields a dominant fastball and will take the mound for Game 1 on Tuesday night.
