When the New York Yankees initially landed Giancarlo Stanton, the hope was for him to be one of the better players in baseball.
While Stanton has dealt with multiple injuries, when he’s on the field, there’s still a strong argument to be made that he’s just as good as anyone.
Unfortunately for Stanton and the Yankees, injuries have rightfully been an issue, as he’s played in just 740 games since 2018.
When looking at what Stanton has done in the postseason and his ability to be ready for the postseason, it’s fair to say that some of those struggles are more than acceptable when it comes to staying healthy during the regular season.
As long as Stanton is ready to go in October, which he has been, the Yankees can live with some of his health problems.
Despite that, Stephen Perello of Yanks Go Yard doesn’t believe that’s the case, naming Stanton as one of three players the Yankees should move on from to create flexibility with their payroll.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel of Giancarlo Stanton's massive 13-year, $325 million contract. The way this breaks down is it's either a two-year, $44 million commitment if his 2028 option is declined (which it will be). Nobody is paying him $25 million for his age-38 season...
“The Yankees might need to chip in some money to move his contract off the books, and the return wouldn't be great, but it is doable. It also might be beneficial to clear the DH spot and allow for a rotation to keep everyone fresh. Trading Stanton would've been impossible just a couple of years ago, but now it is a realistic, if unlikely possibility,” he wrote.
Trading Stanton right now might not be the best idea, especially because the Yankees likely wouldn’t get anything of significance in return.
He only has two years remaining on his contract, so it’s tough to say trading him would be the right decision.
