Yankees predicted to land pitcher with 3.22 ERA in before deadline image

The New York Yankees could be looking to add some starting pitching before today's trade deadline. They could call the Arizona Diamondbacks about one of their pending free agents.

With Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt out for the season, the rotation could be the Yankees' top priority as the trade deadline inches closer. Luis Gil is set to join Max Fried and Carlos Rodón in the rotation soon, but the team may want to add some more reliable arms behind them.

Ryan Yarbrough was pitching great as a starter, and he could return as a stable force in the rotation. However, that should not deter the Yankees from adding an arm. FanSided's Adam Weinrib predicted the Yankees would land Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks.

"Probably the boldest prediction here, but bringing in a battle-tested rental to knock Cam Schlittler/Will Warren to the playoff bullpen seems like Cashman's priority, especially after Jon Heyman's early-morning tweet. Merrill Kelly or Charlie Morton would fit the bill here," wrote Weinrib.

Kelly has a 3.22 ERA in 22 starts this season. He is having one of the better seasons of his seven-year career. He is 36 years old and comes with no long-term commitment.

The Diamondbacks have already traded Eugenio Suárez, and Kelly could be a name to watch today. He would be a great addition to the middle of the rotation and would be a relatively cheap acquisition.
