The New York Yankees will be in the mix for star infielders this offseason after another disappointing playoff exit in 2025, with a rival All-Star being named as a potential candidate.
The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has named the Yankees as a potential fit for third baseman Alex Bregman’s services. Bregman spent 2025 with the Boston Red Sox after signing a three-year deal with them before the season, hitting.273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games. He was named an All-Star for the first time since 2019 for his efforts.
After the Yankees eliminated Bregman’s Red Sox in the American League Wild Card series, Bregman announced that he would be opting out of his current deal, and hitting the open market once again, putting the Yankees in play to sign him to a long-term free agency deal.
“Bregman was a leader in the Boston clubhouse by example and words, mentoring many of the Red Sox young future stars,” Bowden said. “He will be sought-after in free agency as the industry views him as a winning player who can contribute on both sides of the ball and perform on the biggest stage in the biggest moments.”
The Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon to patrol third base at the 2025 trade deadline, which could have an impact on whether or not they choose to pursue Bregman. Nonetheless, adding an experienced third baseman with a strong pedigree of success is a fun scenario to think about for Yankees fans.
