The New York Yankees are heading into an offseason where major moves will be necessary if they want to return to the World Series, as they did in 2024. One of their top priorities will be re-signing versatile defender Cody Bellinger, who has opted out of his contract.

“As expected, New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger plans to opt out of his contract and become a free agent next month, a source told ESPN. Bellinger, 30, has a $25 million player option for next season. After a rebound season in his first year in pinstripes, he presumably will receive widespread interest in free agency -- it should yield a lucrative multi-year contract,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.

Bellinger is expected to be one of the most sought-after names this winter, and his contract is likely to be substantial.

“Predicted Contract: 5 years, $140 million. A $28 million AAV would give Bellinger a slight raise over the $26.6 million figure of his last contract, and while he might push for a sixth year, a five-year deal and an option for 2031 might be where his market ultimately lands,” Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter wrote.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan believes re-signing Bellinger is crucial for the Yankees’ offseason plans.

“Yankees need world beaters at every position. While the bullpen unquestionably needs an overhaul, the biggest hole -- particularly if Trent Grisham doesn't accept the qualifying offer -- is center field. And there's someone who has proven his New York bona fides just waiting to take the position full-time. Re-sign free agent outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger,” Passan wrote.

Bellinger is a highly coveted player that many teams will pursue. For the Yankees, this offseason will not be complete without bringing him back to the Bronx.

The Yankees aim to be back on the grand stage in 2026, and the most impactful way to do that is by landing one of the top free agents available this winter.
