The New York Yankees are slumping a bit and have fallen into a first-place tie in the American League East with the surging Toronto Blue Jays. They have dealt with various injuries this season.

New York is already without Gerrit Cole and were missing Giancarlo Stanton and Luis Gil for a good portion of the season. They could use a little help at third base.

There will be options available that make sense for the Bronx Bombers. However, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report thought of a surprise candidate.

When listing potential destinations for Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, Rymer had the Yankees as an honorable mention.

"The Yankees only just moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to third base, but they'd surely move him back to second if it meant making way for Bregman," Rymer wrote. "But a deal of this magnitude between two longstanding rivals? Yeah, right."

While the Red Sox and Yankees have made a few trades in recent years, something as big is this is highly unlikely. Trades within the same division are already exceptionally rare.

But Bregman would check several boxes for the Yankees. He's a right-handed bat and could fill the third base need. Meanwhile, New York could move Chisholm back to second base.

The two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion is hitting .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI, a 2.9 WAR and a .938 OPS this season. He is currently on the injured list.

But as unlikely as this is, somebody like Bregman is what the Yankees could use as they try to piece together a run in the second half of the season.

It will be interesting to see who some of their options might be.
