While the New York Yankees have fallen back in the American League East divisional hunt, this team still holds a firm spot in the Wild Card. Because of that, the Bronx Bombers will certainly be buyers at the trade deadline, and the 27-time champs have some clear roster needs to addres. One of those weaknesses has been in the infield, specifically at third baseman.
The Yankees have not found a permanent solution at the position throughout 2025, which is exactly why Arizona Diamondbacks’ All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez has been linked to New York over the past few weeks. However, the reigning pennant winners know there’s a possibility this deal doesn’t happen, and MLB.com senior national reporter Mark Feinsand revealed who the Yankees are considering outside of Suárez at third base.
“The Yankees have interest in Ryan McMahon as a backup plan to Eugenio Suárez, sources said, as they try to upgrade at third base” Feinsand reported. “McMahon is controlled through 2027, earning $16 million in each of the next two seasons.”
The Rockies infielder was named to his first All-Star team in 2024. While McMahon hasn’t quite hit that form at the plate this season, his power numbers are up, and as of lefty, that is an ideal strength to have at Yankee Stadium. In addition, the 30-year-old is a quality fielder who would immediately provide stability at third base.
McMahon might not be the flashiest addition for the Yankees at the deadline, but he might come cheaper than Suarez, especially from a Colorado Rockies team that is 100% going to be a seller at the trade deadline.
