Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will enter free agency upon this season’s conclusion, and the possibility of him leaving Toronto is rather strong.

Bichette and the Blue Jays were unable to reach a contract extension before this season, leaving the door open for a potential departure from Toronto. Bichette has spent his entire seven-year career with the Blue Jays, being named to two All-Star teams, and leading the American League in hits two times (Bichette currently leads the American League with 181 hits this season).

Bichette could become the Anthony Volpe replacement

Given his consistent production at a premier position, many teams will come calling for Bichette’s services. Sports Illustrated's Zach Pressnell predicts that the New York Yankees will be amongst the strongest suitors for Bichette.

“With Anthony Volpe struggling tremendously for most of this season, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Yankees take a huge shot for a star like Bichette,” Pressnell said. “It would fill one of the team's biggest holes, though it would be expensive. Adding Bichette would also steal a star from a rival. It would be a win-win for the Bronx Bombers.”

Bichette would be a clear upgrade over Anthony Volpe for the Yankees, who has been one of the worst qualified hitters in the Majors since his debut in 2023. Additionally, Volpe has seen his defense fall off a cliff this season, leading the American League with 19 errors in 2025. While Bichette isn’t the greatest defender himself, the difference in production at the plate is worth the payoff.
